My Journey
I didn’t set out to reinvent my life overnight.
For me, Becoming started with one big decision: giving up alcohol.
At the time, I wasn’t thinking about building a website or creating a community. I just knew I wanted something to change.
What I discovered afterwards was that one change has a way of opening the door to others.
I started looking more closely at my health, my habits, my mindset, my confidence, my relationships and the way I was spending my time. Not because I suddenly had everything figured out, but because I began to realise how much of life is shaped by the small things we repeatedly do.
01 / The turning point
The decision that started it
Giving up alcohol became a turning point for me.
It didn’t magically solve everything, and I don’t want to pretend that personal change works like that.
But it gave me the space to look at my life differently.
What is helping me?
What is holding me back?
What could I change?
What kind of person do I want to become?
Those questions are still part of my life now.
02 / The ripple effect
One change led to another
As I began changing one area of my life, I became interested in others.
Better habits. Looking after my physical health. Taking my mental wellbeing more seriously. Building confidence. Learning new things. Being more present with the people around me. Trying to create routines that actually support the life I want to live.
Some things worked. Some didn’t. Some lasted for a while and then disappeared.
Progress doesn’t have to be perfect to count.
03 / Still learning
I’m still figuring it out
I don’t want Becoming to give the impression that I reached some point where everything suddenly fell into place.
I haven’t.
There are still things I struggle with, habits I’m trying to improve and areas of my life I want to work on. There are good weeks and bad weeks. Times when I feel motivated, and times when I don’t.
But I’m learning that changing your life doesn’t necessarily mean making huge dramatic moves. Sometimes it is simply making one better choice today, then trying again tomorrow.
04 / Lessons so far
What I’ve learned so far
I’m not an expert, coach or guru. Everything I share here comes from my own experience, curiosity and the things I’m learning along the way.
- Small changes can become surprisingly powerful over time.
- What works for one person might not work for another.
- Setbacks don’t erase the progress you’ve already made.
- You don’t need to wait until you feel completely ready.
- Looking after yourself can improve far more than just your own life.
- There is always something new to learn.
Most importantly, I’ve stopped thinking of personal growth as a destination.
05 / Where I am now
Where I am now
I am currently in a really happy place. Compared with where I was a year ago, it feels good to feel human again.
Life still has its challenges, but I feel more positive, more focused and more aware of the small daily habits that help me move in the right direction.
Right now, I am working on building healthy routines that support my wellbeing. I have been waking up at 5am, even at weekends, reading more, and I am currently enjoying Atomic Habits, which has really made me think about the power of small, consistent changes.
I am also preparing my breakfast and lunch for work the night before. It sounds like a small thing, but it helps me avoid falling back into unhealthy choices when life gets busy.
I am sticking to my gym routine of four sessions a week, although it can be tricky to balance that with my son’s school, clubs, family commitments, work and time for myself. Like many people, I am still learning how to balance family time, work, time with my wife and personal time in a way that feels realistic and healthy.
Each day, I am trying to achieve something small and stick with it. Whether that is completing an Italian lesson on Duolingo, planning in my bullet journal, writing out timetables or simply making better choices, those small wins are helping me feel more in control and more positive.
My bullet journal is still a bit sporadic, but that is part of the process too. I don’t need to do everything perfectly. I just want to keep coming back to the things that help.
I have also added a completely new challenge for myself by creating this website.
My hope is that Becoming can grow into a positive space for sharing ideas, plans, books, useful things I discover and anything else that might help somebody improve their life. If something has helped me, it might help someone else too — and passing that forward feels like the right direction.
Keep learning. Keep building better habits. Become more efficient. And continue creating a happier, healthier life — one small step at a time.
Becoming
Not fixing yourself. Not chasing perfection.
I chose the name Becoming because that is what this feels like to me.
Not trying to become somebody completely different. Just continuing to learn, change and move in a better direction.
I’ll use this site to document that process honestly — the things that help, the things that don’t, the lessons, the setbacks and the small wins.
And if something I share helps somebody else make a positive change in their own life, then hopefully they can pass it forward too.
One small change at a time.
